Families face huge 15% rise in holidays next year as firms report flood of bookings

Families planning to go abroad on holiday next year are facing sky-high prices.

Insiders say the cost of foreign breaks could be around 15% higher than this year.

Some flights for next Easter are around a fifth more expensive than 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

It comes as travel firms reported a flood of bookings for 2022.

Holiday giant Tui has had a record 120% surge in holidays sold for next year. It has taken 1.3 million bookings from the UK and Europe, with 744,000 breaks for 2022 snapped up since May.

Tui chief executive Fritz Joussen admitted “prices are higher than 2019,” with rises also due to customers booking longer holidays and more expensive digs.

Martyn James, spokesman for the complaints service Resolver, said: “We all need a holiday but it will be more expensive. Prices are going to go up. I think 15% could be quite optimistic.”

But Emma Coulthurst, expert at the website Travelsupermarket, said there were no signs yet that package holiday prices were up.

She added: “Prices might rise at some point if more people are willing to travel next year.”

Research by the Mirror via online travel agency Kayak found overseas air fares for next Easter are on average a fifth more expensive than in 2019, at £441 compared with £365.
