Price of first-class stamp to increase for the eighth time in six years

  • The price of a first-class stamp has increased by 10p to £1.80, effective from Tuesday, with second-class stamps also rising by 4p to 91p.
  • This marks the eighth increase for first-class stamps in six years, during which the price has more than doubled by 137 per cent in that period.
  • Royal Mail justified the price changes by citing the rising cost of delivery, falling letter volumes, and an increase in the number of addresses it serves.
  • The price hikes occur despite Royal Mail's persistent failure to meet its delivery targets, having last met its annual first-class post target in 2019-20.
  • Citizens Advice criticised the move, arguing that higher prices should be accompanied by higher standards and linked to Royal Mail's performance.
