Price hike in Paisley rental rooms for COP26 summit, with one three-bedroom house going for £25,600 for 13 nights

Gold-dust hotel and short-term rental rooms in Paisley have soared in cost - thanks to Glasgow's COP26 summit.

As accommodation across Renfrewshire sells out ahead of the SEC-based UN Climate Change Conference, a two-week stay in some properties in the area will now set you back more than £25,000.

More than 140 world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, are set to descend on Glasgow for the event but the lack of accommodation in the city for some 25,000 expected delegates has seen rooms snapped up in surrounding areas.

The event has meant demand has outstripped supply in hotels and rental properties in Renfrewshire, along with those in the city, for the duration from October 31 to November 13.

It has led to soaring rates in the only available venues.

Glasgow Airport Apartments top the bill by offering a three-bed home in Paisley's Inchinnan Road for the event, at the eye-watering tariff of £25,600 for a 13-night stay for one adult during the conference.

The bill makes up more than half of the value of the house, which went for £50,000 in January 2018. A nearby semi-detached property sold for £76,500 in 2020.

Oakshaw Guesthouse in West Brae offers a double room for a hefty £5,626 for a 14 night spell - well above the £520 bill for a single room at the same property for two weeks later in November. The property attracts a 2.5 'average' rating on TripAdvisor.

The limited number of hotels with availability are also cashing in, with Glasgow Airport's Holiday Inn charging £10,209 for a twin room based on one adult staying during the COP run, compared with £855 for the same accommodation the following fortnight.

A spokeswoman for Intercontinental Hotel Group Hotels & Resorts, which includes the Holiday Inn, said: "We welcome the expected increase in visitors and hotel bookings in and around Glasgow during this important global climate event."

Fleming Street in Paisley (Andrew Neil)

A three-bedroom home in Paisley's Fleming Street is also up for grabs for a tidy £18,612 for a 14 night stay, with a two-bed apartment close to the town's Castlehead also still available for £19,635.
