Price gap between Morrisons and 'most expensive' supermarket widens after Savers cut

If there's one supermarket we've heard a lot about during the cost of living crisis it's Morrisons.

For more than six months it ranked as the most expensive out of the main six supermarkets we price checked with a weekly comparison and shoppers even accused the retailer of 'taking the mick' by hiking prices unnecessarily.

But for the last fortnight it's Asda that has been bottom of the table, largely because the price of its chicken breasts is now the most expensive of the lot, at £3 for a 300g pack, 71p dearer than both Aldi and Lidl.

And now, after Morrisons reduced the price of its Savers tea bags this week, to 62p for a pack of 80, the gap between the retailer and Asda has widened further.

The full shopping basket, which as well as the chicken and tea bags also includes a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a pack of mince, coffee, beans and butter, now costs £11.83 at Asda, compared with Morrisons' £11.67.

It's also brought Morrisons on a par with Sainsbury's, also £11.67, and Tesco, which is just a penny less at £11.66 - after it reduced the price of its beans by 1p this week. Lidl remains the cheapest of all at £11.23, followed by Aldi's £11.36.

The fact there are no price increases in this week's comparison will be a welcome relief for households, who are struggling to make ends meet amid relentless hikes to food and energy bills.

But despite prices at record highs, there have been warnings that food prices have yet to peak.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), having already soared to a record high of 13.3 per cent in December, food inflation rose even further in January to hit 13.8 per cent - with shop prices now 8% higher than they were last January.

BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said: "With global food costs coming down from their 2022 high and the cost of oil falling, we expect to see some inflationary pressures easing. However, as retailers still face ongoing headwinds from rising energy bills and labour shortages, prices are yet to peak and will likely remain high in the near term as a result.”
