Prezzo in Cardiff city centre has closed and it will be replaced with a Turkish restaurant

An Italian restaurant chain in Cardiff city centre has closed down and will be replaced by a Turkish restaurant.

Prezzo, in St Mary Street, is one of 94 restaurants across the country to shut after a deal was made with creditors Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA).

The closures are a bid to save money and reduce rents by closing unprofitable branches.

The Cardiff branch closed on March 22 having been named as one of the stores to close.

Speaking last year when the closures were announced, Prezzo CEO Jon Hendry-Pickup said: "I would like to thank our creditors and landlords for supporting our transformation plan.

"While we continue to be profitable, the pressures on our industry have been well documented.

"Despite this being a tough decision, the support given by our creditors shows that they believe we have the right approach to transforming Prezzo in the eyes of team, customers and stakeholders.

"It has been a challenging time during the CVA process and I would like to thank our suppliers, colleagues and customers for their patience and support."

A spokesperson from TPG, owners of Prezzo, said that staff working at the Cardiff restaurant had been redeployed.

The building, which is currently empty, will be taken over by Lezzet Turkish Restaurant which is due to open in the near future.

The company already has a restaurant in Newcastle and serves a menu featuring starters like aubergine salad and halloumi cheese, mains including stuffed chicken breast and lamb shank as well as mix grills, seafood and wraps.
