Pretty thatch cottage with a second front door leading to a hidden annexe

Some cottages are pretty and some are 'chocolate box' ready and this achingly attractive thatch in the countryside could easily be on the cover photo of any tin of shortbread or box of sweet yummies.

Maybe add a rambling rose around the front door and a white picket fence around the garden and the cottage goes straight to the top of the character dream home for sale in Wales list.

The cottage was built on the brow of an undulating hillside and the benefit of that is immediately obvious; spectacular and sweeping views. Looking one way, occupants at the cottage can marvel at the Ceredigion countryside that sweeps down to the Cardigan Bay coast and in the other direction, the majestic Cambrian mountains.

The cottage is well positioned to thoroughly and fully enjoy all that the country and coast location can offer too, from rural rambling to water based activities, from coastal walks to surfing the Welsh waves.

Local amenities are available at the nearby villages of Cross Inn and Llanrhystud which include general stores, a primary school, a nursery and public houses.

The pretty Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is about seven miles away for a more bustling evening out or afternoon pint or cream tea. And the cottage is also centrally located for the larger university towns of Lampeter and Aberystwyth both only between 11 and 13 miles away.

The cottage is called Brynhyfryd and it might look cute but it actually punches above its perceived property weight as it can offer you a home plus a potential holiday let, subject to necessary planning permission, and all of that is somehow tucked under that thatch roof.

But Brynhyfryd is not the only charming cottage for sale that might capture your heart. There's a truly unique stunner in Dolgellau called Lion Cottage that used to be two cottages but is now one beautiful home that has been lavished with interior design care and attention. Take a tour around 'one of a kind' Lion Cottage here.

Back to the thatch by the coast and it's hard to handle the thought of two homes hiding within the thick stone walls, but that's exactly what Brynhyfryd gives you.

The main section of the property is a delightful one bed home on one level, with the front door entering straight into the open-plan kitchen dining and living room.

There's the hoped for log burner but not in an inglenook fireplace but rather on a slate hearth and next to the cottage's probably original oven and bread oven burrowing into the chimney breast. A new owner may want to burrow into the wall themselves, just to see if an inglenook is hiding behind the white-washed brickwork.

No need to worry about reinstating the original cooking facilities for supper, as the cottage comes with a range cooker and cute kitchen in the corner that includes open shelving and a view out over the countryside.

This open-plan space is cosy but feels light and spacious too, thanks to the use of mainly white as the decor, a ceiling that has been lifted into the roof space to a degree, plus light flooring. The thick, robust ceiling beams that remain are a joy to see and add to the charm of the space.

Through the door next to the kitchen and the bedroom and then bathroom await you. The tactile white-washed stone walls and wood panelling flank the garden view from the cute bedroom window, and the next door bathroom is surprisingly spacious for a period cottage - even accommodating a full size bath.

And thinking about next door, there's an extra door at the front of the cottage that opens into the bonus this cottage can offer a new owner - a single-storey annexe that shares the pretty thatch roof.

Inside is a fabulous space raised to the roof line to create a double-height living area, so it feels spacious. The annexe also includes a cute crog loft mezzanine upper level as the sleeping zone.

The exposed roof rafters and beams give this annexe its own beautiful charm, and to climb the stairs and be surrounded by them before you drift off to sleep on the mezzanine is like snuggling up next to the core of the cottage.

And the crog loft is not a pokey little platform, the roof is high, the beams are beautiful, and there's space to navigate around the whole of a double bed.

From this mezzanine level the view down to the open-plan living area below, and the beams that encase the space, is a joyful first view every morning before the rural vistas through the windows can grab your attention.

Tucked under the crog loft is the kitchen that brings some brushed stainless steel and a contemporary shade of blue to add more texture and visual interest to the already insitu exposed stone wall, wood worktop, and slate floor.

Next to the kitchen, and also under the mezzanine, is the annexe shower room and it's an attractive space obviously recently renovated to a high standard. The main feature in here is a double width walk-in shower with grey metro tiles that complement the continuation of the slate floor tiles into this space.

According to the agent, the cottage has mains electricity and water, private drainage and the main section of the thatch roof was replaced in 2021.

Brynhyfryd is set in a good size plot with pretty cottage-style gardens, a summerhouse and nicely positioned seating areas to take in the fabulous views.

But there is no getting away from the fact that the cottage is next to a country road but it is hardly the M4, and if it is going to be a holiday let as well as a home then maybe this easy access is a bonus; the road easily gets you or your guests to Llanrhystud Beach in just a few minutes.

Brynhyfryd is for sale with a guide price of £295,000 with estate agent Aled Ellis & Co, call the Aberystwyth branch on 01970 626160 to find out more.
