Pretty Little Liars reboot in works from Riverdale showrunner with 'new story'

Hit teen mystery series Pretty Little Liars looks set to get a reboot from Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

The series originally ran from 2010 to 2017 on the ABC Family Network, lasting for seven seasons.

This was followed by spin-off series Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, the latter of which was cancelled after one season last year.

It seems the franchise is set to make a big comeback, however.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aguirre-Sacasa is set to pen the new story with new characters for the show's comeback.

The reboot does not currently have a network, but it is believed to be targeting a release on streaming service HBO Max.

Aguirre-Sacasa is best known for his work with producer Greg Berlanti on the hit CW show Riverdale, along with its recently cancelled spin-off series Katy Keene and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Katy Keene, which was released on BBC iPlayer in the UK, was recently cancelled after one season, while Netflix has ended its Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot following four runs of episodes.

It is reported that Aguirre-Sacasa is working on a new spin-off set in the Archie Comics world of Riverdale, but is also focused on delivering a new era for his central show as it undergoes a time jump in its upcoming fifth season.

Actress Lucy Hale, who played Aria in the original Pretty Little Liars, has previously suggested she would produce a new iteration of the classic show.

She told ET in May: "I feel like they're gonna do a spinoff or something before [a reunion].

"I don't know. I'm so protective of this show.

"So I feel like when the time comes that they want to do it with a whole new cast, I might have to produce it because I'm way too protective of it."

THR reports that there is no word on Hale's involvement in the series.

The original series also starred Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Holly Marie Combs, Shay Pietrese, and Janel Parrish.
