Four teenagers have died — and a fifth is fighting for her life — after a shocking single-vehicle crash on a quiet country road in Victoria.

Police described a “pretty horrific” scene, which they covered in a large tarp, near the town of Bochara, in the state’s southwest.

It’s understood a passerby discovered the confronting wreckage and reported it to police at about 9.30am Saturday.

It’s not yet known when the fatal accident occurred.

After initially reporting that the victims were “four women”, police later said they were two teen boys and two teen girls from the nearby town of Hamilton.

Police confirmed four died at the scene, while one teenage girl was flown to The Alfred hospital, Melbourne, where she was in a critical condition as of Saturday evening.

The girl sustained upper body injuries in the crash.

Police said it appeared the sedan was driving on Wannon-Nigretta Falls Road, in a farming area, when it lost control and slammed into a tree.

The tree-lined road, which has a 100km/hr speed limit, is single lane and requires cars to move onto the shoulder for oncoming traffic.

It cuts through an area surrounded by farms.

Victoria Police was on Saturday evening yet to confirm the ages of the four people who died, as they had not been formally identified.

“We believe they’re local. The scene is still pretty horrific at the moment and we’re still making those inquiries,” Sergeant Ryan Nelson told Nine News.

“Hamilton is a very close-knit community, and there’s five people involved in this and all of their families, all of their friends.

“It’s going to hit the town really hard.

“There’s a lot of people out there who want answers and we want to give those people those answers but we just need the time to investigate this thing.”

Investigations into the crash were ongoing, a police spokeswoman said.
