Pretty coastal cottage with a beach for its back garden

If you like a day at the beach, this very pretty cottage can offer you a life at the beach, with the sweeping sands an ever-changing piece of artwork at every rear window and the tempting water that's just a jump over the back garden fence.

Imagine breakfast on the sunny deck with the sound of the waves your gentle summer wake up call and the sun setting over the water as your late night relaxer before retiring to bed. When the weather is not your alfresco dining friend the picture windows at the rear of the house create a sea view picture to tempt you to sit and stare for hours.

From the street, this cottage on Cardigan Bay looks like a little sweetie but is actually hiding three bedrooms, two bedrooms and two living rooms, one of them cleverly located on the first floor to gain maximum panoramic sea view advantage, although this room could become a fourth bedroom if required.

The cottage that is as pretty inside as the outside suggests is the direct neighbour of the amazing beach at Borth. This Ceredigion coastal village hugs the vast sand and pebble beach that is the longest in the county. According to website Visit Wales, the Blue Flag awarded beach is three miles long with mainly soft golden sand and shallow waters that make it popular with families.

The wind from the sea and the vast amount of space on the water also makes it popular with sailboard enthusiasts and people who like to swim, surf and stroll. And what other beach can boast a petrified forest?

Visit Wales states that an ancient submerged forest is visible at certain times of the year at low tide along the stretch of shore with pine, oak, birch and willow stumps can be seen when the tide retreats up to 150 yards. The petrified forest has become associated with a 17th Century myth of a sunken civilization known as Cantre'r Gwaelod, or the Sunken Hundred.

The village itself has a range of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs as well as local amenities so there is life beyond the beach surrounding this cottage, but it is surely a challenge to detach yourself from the expansive view of this special expanse of sand and pebbles and be anywhere else.

Inside, the cottage has all the charm hoped for but not promised by the pretty front facade painted a soft grey and the white gate leading to a pretty pink front door, which has an unexpected but most welcome stained glass window next to it.

The bay window can also boast stained glass panels that assist in ensuring the bay itself is an attractive addition to the facade of the house, giving it extra interest and visual appeal. Push open the pink door and the charming features begin immediately via parquet wood flooring, and exposed beams and ceiling painted white.

The flooring and ceiling continue into the spacious and welcoming lounge that can add an exposed brick chimney housing a log burner to the beautiful bay window as features to charm in this social space. Above the burner there's a wooden mantle and below a chunky slate hearth.

There are views towards the pretty cottages opposite from the bay window at one end of the space and views to the sky and sea at the other end. Maybe a new owner will investigate the possibility of changing this rear window into a glass door out onto the garden for maximum beach connection.

Into the kitchen diner at the rear of the cottage and a kitchen table that can not only provide the sociable spot in this spacious room but also a spot to fully enjoy the beach view.

The quarry floor tiles are a joyful character addition to the room which is all about classic cottage features, from the kitchen units with wooden handles to the statement stripped wood dresser.

Again, if the new owner wanted more indoor outdoor flow than the picture window offers, and moving the table to the centre of the room is an option, a set of French doors out to the rear deck would be a delightful addition, letting the sea breezes in and the potential smell of burnt food depending on how good the cook is, out.

Up to the first floor and this level could claim to be a bit of a Tardis space as it's hiding potentially four bedrooms, a shower room and a cloakroom according to the estate agent.

The room at the rear of the cottage, in the wing where you will find the kitchen diner below and that juts out into the garden, is currently being used as a second lounge and that makes total sense if you don't need so many bedrooms.

From the elevated position the sweeping views from its picture window are sensational. No doubt this is a space that is frequented very often and provides great pleasure.

Again, if budget and planning allows, there might be the opportunity to create either a Juliet balcony in this room to replace the window, or an actual balcony structure that means you can walk out into the sunshine via French or sliding doors and onto a first floor veranda.

An added balcony would also create a covered seating area underneath - perfect for the moments when you want to sit outside and watch the weather over the water put on a show but you don't want to get wet from the rain.

The three remaining bedrooms all ooze character thanks mainly to the opening up of the ceilings into the roof space to reveal exposed beams and rafters that are a classic quintessential cottage feature. The choice of interior design is classic cottage too, tasteful and comfortable, relating to the home's coastal location but not labouring the point.

As the house is so close to nature and has so many natural features displayed - wooden floors, exposed beams, slate hearth, exposed stone walls, and quarry tiles - the choice of natural materials used in the decor such as cotton, rattan, stripped wood, and even cork and rope, blend beautifully.

Add in soft shades of blue and grey, with the occasional statement colour and pattern to add an extra layer of visual interest, and the decor could easily be described as timeless coastal cottage chic that ensures a comfortable and beautifully presented home that always offers a wonderful welcome.
