To go alongside its popular drinks subscription service, coffee shop chain Pret A Manger has launched a new meal deal today.
Meal deals are discounted bundles, most regularly offered at supermarkets, which usually allow customers to buy a main meal, snack and drink at a reduced price.
A similar coffee and croissant combination will also be available from Pret at breakfast time for £5.
This isn’t the first time Pret has rolled out a meal deal scheme – a similar scheme was successfully trialled in France in January before launching in the UK.
The scheme will be trialled in 70 of the almost 500 stores the chain holds in the UK.
Pret coffee subscription deals are currently available under the “Pret Club” membership – for £5 a month subscribers can purchase up to five hot or iced “barista-made” drinks a day at half price.
Pano Christou, Pret’s CEO, said: “Going forward our priority will be to drive transactions and sustainable growth by offering great value for money for Pret customers.”
The move comes after the value of the chain was slashed by a third amid “intense strains” on the hospitality industry.
Pret has also come under fire in previous years, including in 2023, when it was accused of “Pret-flation”, for raising the prices of its sandwiches exponentially, resulting in the chain reducing prices to appease customers.
How does the Pret meal deal compare to other shops?
Pret’s new meal deal is the most expensive on the market - it will cost between £6 and £7 - as the shop will test the deals at different prices to see how consumers react.
In comparison, the Tesco meal deal costs £4.25, or £3.85 for Clubcard holders, while the Sainsbury’s basic meal deal is £3.95.
The Waitrose “food to go meal” which includes a main, drink and snack, costs £5, as does the “big deal” from Greggs, which includes a main, side and drink for £5, offering customers a wide range of options from sandwich, salad, pasta or chicken goujons.
