Pret A Manger launches first loyalty scheme to get freebies - how it works explained

Coffee chain Pret A Manger is trialling its first ever loyalty programme - but it’s not available to everyone just yet.

Pret Perks sees customers earn stars which they can then exchange for personalised freebies.

The cafe giant says users will earn a star every time they spend money in store or when they use click and collect.

The star is added per transaction, rather than per item you buy - so making a bigger purchase won't earn you any more stars compared to buying just one drink.

Pret Coffee subscribers will also earn a star for every month they renew their subscription, along with every snack or meal they purchase alongside one of their free drinks per day.

After receiving ten stars, customers can then choose a free reward which should be tailored to what you usually buy.

This is the first time Pret has announced a loyalty service (Tom Wren / SWNS.com)

Pret says some of the freebies will include food such as popcorn or cookies.

Customers can redeem their reward in shops up to 30 days after earning it.

There will also be the option to earn bonus stars at random through “acts of kindness” although Pret hasn’t said exactly how this will work in reality.

Sadly, Pret Perks also isn’t available to download for everyone just yet.

Members of its YourPret Barista coffee subscription service, where you pay £20 a month for up to five beverages per day, will be the first to trial the new scheme from today.

It is then expected that Pret will roll out the scheme to everyone in the new year.

Clare Clough, UK managing director of Pret A Manger said: “We are currently in the testing phase and rolling this out slowly to our Pret Superfans, our Coffee Subscribers, and will be looking to take learnings on board.

“We hope to open it up to all customers as soon as possible in 2022.

“Over the past 18 months we’ve responded to how people now want to interact with our brand and products, from launching bake-at-home croissants, to growing our digital capabilities through the launch of Pret’s Coffee Subscription.

“We’re excited by this latest digital evolution for customers to engage with our brand.”

Other coffee loyalty schemes

  • Costa Coffee: Costa customers earn a "bean" every time they purchase a drink. Once you collect eight beans, you're then entitled to a free beverage of any size.
  • Starbucks: If Starbucks is your go-to, you get three stars as part of its loyalty scheme for every £1 you spend. You then need 150 stars to claim a free drink.
  • McDonald's: You can get a regular hot drink free when you collect five stamps through the My McDonald's app. Loyalty stamps are added automatically when you make a purchase.
