Prestwich chippy owner 'gutted' after not making the final 10 in the 'chippy world cup'

The owner of Prestwich chip shop Chips @ No 8 has said he’s ‘gutted’ after not being chosen for the final 10 in the 2023 ‘chippy world cup’. Dan Edwards made it to the last 20 in the annual awards, run by the National Federation of Fish Friers, the most prestigious awards in the industry.

But he didn’t make the final 10, following an interview stage where the best chippies in the land were grilled by experts. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Dan said: “We were absolutely gutted to find out that we hadn’t made it through to the final round, but the team can be incredibly proud of themselves to have got as far as we did in our first year entering the competition.

“It was a great experience and we’re stronger for it. We know what we have to do now to improve and we’re already working hard to deliver an even greater experience. I know we’re banging out some of the best fish and chips in the country.

“The target is final 10 next year, and then if, and when, we get a bigger shop, we can have a real chance of winning it.”

Dan opened the chip shop in 2018, and it's since become a go-to spot for fish and chip fans and chefs from across the city, frying its fish and chips in beef dripping (unless specified otherwise).

Here are some of the nominees at this year’s awards, including the best chip shop, best fish and chip restaurant and the best newcomers. Sadly, the nearest nominee to Manchester for best chip shop is in Pudsey, Yorkshire, 48 miles away.
