Preston North End manager search: Motherwell boss among potential candidates for job

Preston North End are on the hunt for a new manager after former Hamilton Accies coach Frankie McAvoy was sacked last night.

And Motherwell boss Graham Alexander is among the early contenders being touted as his replacement at the English Championship club.

Alexander made over 400 appearances for Preston during his career over two spells and the former Scotland international is well-respected for his work in England's lower leagues with Fleetwoood Town, Scunthorpe United and Salford City.

The 50-year-old was also breifly in joint-caretaker charge of Preston with David Unsworth between December 2011 and January 2012 while he was a player, winning two games from five.

And the following season he hung up his boots and was appointed the club's head of youth development before landing his first managerial job at Fleetwood a few months later.

Alexander is approaching a year at the helm at Fir Park after replacing Stephen Robinson in January and has the Steelmen sitting fifth in the Scottish Premiership.

Reports have suggested St Johnstone boss Calum Davidson is one of the main contenders for the position, following his domestic cup success with the Saints last season, which saw them win a League Cup and Scottish Cup double.

Such an appointment would see North End continue their link with Scottish managers, with McAvoy having replaced ex-Hamilton Accies boss Alex Neil at Deepdale earlier this year.

McAvoy, 54, had taken over on a caretaker basis before landing the job permanently. However, a run of six wins in 21 games sealed his fate and his final match came in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Blackburn.

The Lancashire Evening Post have reported that Preston do already have a replacement in mind and that he is in another job elsewhere.
