Preston in disarray as positive coronavirus test posted after first contact session

Preston's preparations for their return have been hit because a player has tested positive for COVID-19 following their first contact training session on Tuesday.

The players were tested on Monday, but the results, which revealed the coronavirus case, were only made known after Preston’s first contact session yesterday.

The unnamed player will have to self-isolate for seven days.

And the rest of the squad would have to remain at home for 14 days under the Government’s track and trace policy.

However football is being treated differently and Preston’s medical staff have the discretion to decide if any players were in prolonged close contact and need to self-isolate.

Alex Neil’s squad took part in a 10 vs 10 practice game at their Springfields training ground, after becoming one of the first Championship clubs to begin contact training.

Yesterday’s positive test came after striker Jayden Stockley was shown to be asymptomatic on Friday and told to self isolate for a week.

Stockley was tested on Thursday before the players took part in training in small groups of five on Friday.

One of that group has now tested positive and boss Alex Neil will be hoping he does not lose any more members of his squad with the Championship due to restart on June 20.

Preston are in contention for a play-off place as they bid to return to the top flight for the first time since 1960.
