Preston boss rooting for historic Scotland Euros win at Hampden

Preston North End boss Frankie McAvoy says he's got his fingers crossed that Scotland can beat Croatia tonight and get out of the group stages at the Euros.

Steve Clarke's men are on the verge of potentially making history by getting into the knock-out stages of a major tournament for the first time in their history, and need a win at Hampden.

McAvoy, who took over for Preston's remaining eight games last season when Alex Neil was sacked, and was given the job full-time after steering them to five wins and two draws, says he has the utmost respect for Clarke and what the players have already achieved.

And Bellshill man McAvoy, who was an academy coach at Hamilton Accies before being assistant to Alex Neil at New Douglas Park, Norwich and Preston, said the 0-0 draw with England at Wembley on Friday night was a proud moment for a Scot living and working in England.

He said: "Scotland are on the periphery tonight, if they win their game against Croatia they could get into the play-offs at the Euros - what a magnificent achievement!

"I have nothing but the greatest respect for Steve Clarke and what he's done at Scotland, and the players deserve immense credit.

"Even their performance on Friday night, I was so proud down here in England, because I don't think many people gave us a chance.

"But as Scotsmen you know we're desperate to do well and prove the doubters wrong.

"I just hope the boys can do that tonight.

"I'll be rooting for them and will have my fingers crossed that they can do well and take us out of the group stages and into the knock-out stages of a championship, which would be phenomenal."
