Preston and Ireland striker Sean Maguire investing in fitness during Covid-19 lockdown

In an ideal world, Ireland striker Sean Maguire would be preparing for a Euro 2020 playoff final against Northern Ireland or Bosnia tomorrow night.

But there is nothing ideal about this coronavirus pandemic that has affected every walk of life.

So instead of dreaming of the Euros, Preston North End striker Maguire this week splashed out on a spinning bike and weights bench to keep fit at home.

Like every other footballer, the former League of Ireland star is trying to stay as active as possible in a lockdown.

“It is a strange situation for everyone to be in, whatever you do for a living,” Kilkenny man Maguire told the 'Lancashire Post'.

“There are a few people who seem to be treating this as a holiday and aren’t taking it as seriously as they should.

“This virus is killing people, it has to be taken seriously and if that means only leaving the house when you really have to, it has to be done.”

Amid a UK lockdown, Maguire has to limit the amount of training he can do outside of his house.

“Sometimes it will be myself and my girlfriend taking the dog for a walk, other times I’ll go for a run.

“I bought some gym equipment - a spin bike and weights bench. I’ve always wanted to get my own home gym so this was the perfect chance to start.

“I’m doing two forms of exercise a day as well as getting out for a run on the roads.”

The club’s fitness coach is in regular contact and Maguire added: “When this is all over football will be a massive part in people’s lives, and we want to be prepared.”
