Pressure to extend travel green list - with Malta and Balearics poised for upgrade

The UK government is under pressure to add more destinations to the quarantine-free green list of resorts contained in its controversial travel traffic light system.

The latest review is scheduled for Thursday with the traffic light system set to be updated by Monday, June 28.

There is speculation that double-vaccinated adults will be given the go-ahead to travel to amber list destinations without quarantine on return to the UK from July 19, while some experts claim this could be delayed until August.

Resorts that could be among destinations added to the green list include Malta, Finland, Croatia and the Balearic islands, including Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca.

Ministers are reported to be considering limited changes to the list – possibly including some Caribbean islands – because of the four-week delay to the lifting of domestic lockdown restrictions until mid-July.

Data from travel consultancy, the PC Agency, claims at least 14 amber countries should be made green based on the UK’s criteria.

It suggests the USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Morocco could also be given the green light.

But boss Paul Charles has predicted additions will be limited.

He said: “They may add a few greens, it’s possible they won’t. I think they will do a handful to show they are sticking to the data, of course there should be more, but they are so cautious.

“Nothing’s going to budge them from their cautious approach but it should because their own NHS Test and Trace data is very clear there are very few variants of concern coming from amber list countries.

“They may move some red countries to amber, like Turkey which should be in amber now.”

Other reports suggest the Balearic Islands are safe to be moved onto the green list.

Mr Charles posted on social media: "Why doesn’t the government give an opening date for the travel sector in the same way as it is for the domestic sector, so that both can benefit from the vaccination roll out?"
