Pressure of lockdown prove too much for teen after row

The pressures of lockdown proved too much for a 16-year-old Motherwell boy who had a row with his parents in the early hours.

The teenager, who was already subject to a court curfew order, stormed out of the flat.

He was arrested and at Hamilton Sheriff Court admitted breaching bail and threatening or abusive behaviour on May 1.

The court heard police officers attended after a report at 3am and found the accused sitting under a tree between Doonside Tower and Shields Road.

When he saw them he made off and ran into a nearby tower block.

The officers followed and when they realised he’d gone into a lift they waited on a landing for him to emerge.

The lad then became abusive, shouting and swearing at the officers. He was taken to the ground and handcuffed.

Defence agent Gerry McGuire said the lockdown had taken its toll on the boy and his parents.

Mr McGuire explained: “There was an argument and my client stormed out in the early hours.

“There was pressure on the household. His father runs his own business but has not been working during the lockdown.

“He hopes the business will be back in operation in a few weeks and he can employ his son.

“My client can only apologise to his parents and the police for his stupid behaviour.”

The boy wasn’t present in court for the hearing.

Sheriff Thomas Millar deferred sentence on him until October 29 for good behaviour.
