Press gag 1, by a South African judge

One of South Africa's major newspapers, the Sunday Independent, has been prohibited from publishing a story about alleged nepotism in the latest round of appointments to the country's crime intelligence division.

A court injunction was granted to the government late on Friday to prevent publication. The judge ruled that the paper could not publish any information pertaining to the advertisement and appointment of any individual within the division.

Independent Newspapers is planning to appeal. It has received support from the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef).
