A memory of Fleet Street's press baron era was evoked at a Christie's auction in California last week when a Rolls-Royce once owned by the newspaper proprietor, Viscount Kemsley, went up for sale. The Silver Wraith failed to reach its reserve price, but is expected to be sold to a private buyer for £100,000. Kemsley (born Gomer Berry) bought the car after ensuring that the roof was high enough to allow him to drive it while wearing his top hat. Kemsley, erstwhile owner of the Sunday Times, the Daily Sketch and a string of regional titles, died in 1968. His car, later shipped to the States, was discovered at a long-abandoned Ford dealership in Kansas. (Via Blackburn ET)
