President Xi to Attend Trilateral Climate Summit with France, Germany

What’s new: Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a China-France-Germany leaders’ climate summit via video link on Friday, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Thursday, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Why it matters: The announcement came as U.S. President Joe Biden’s climate envoy John Kerry meets his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua, Xi’s top aide on climate change affairs, in Shanghai for talks on global warming and the U.N. climate conference scheduled for later this year.

Biden has invited 40 world leaders, including President Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, to a leader’s summit on climate due to take place on April 22 to 23. It is unclear whether the trilateral meeting between China, France and Germany is linked to the U.S.-initiated summit next week.
