RAJKOT: The pristine beach of Madhavpur Ghed, 60 km from Porbandar, will resonate with festivities as President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurates the annual Ram Navmi fair here on Sunday.
The fair was suspended for two years due to Covid-induced restrictions.
Official sources said Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat, chief minister (CM) Bhupendra Patel, Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma and other ministers will remain present in the inaugural function. Folk artists from the north-eastern state have arrived in Madhavpur.
According to folklore, Madhavpur village was the witness to the marriage of Lord Krishna and Rukmani. The 15th century Madhavrai temple marks the event.
The temple trust and gram panchayat used to organise a cultural fair every year in the memory of Lord Krishna's marriage and the central government has given this fair the status of national cultural event.
According to the tourism department, "A colourful chariot carrying the idol of Lord Krishna circumnavigates the village and the festivities usually continue for five days."
