President of Israel Reuven Rivlin condemns swastika graffiti in Bristol as police launch investigation

Isreal's president has blasted a huge neon swastika sprayed on a car in Bristol as a 'shocking sign of rising antisemitism'.

Police have launched an investigation after the 'giant symbol of hate' was left on the vehicle on Waters Road, Kingswood.

It was spotted by neighbour Nick Helfenbein on Yom Kippur - the holiest day of the year in Judaism.

Today (Tuesday, September 29), Reuven Rivlin tweeted: "This is the shocking sight of rising antisemitism - a swastika sprayed on a car on Yom Kippur in Britain yesterday.

"Words of condemnation are not enough. We need Holocaust education and remembrance so governments and societies everywhere actively challenge this threat to Jews."

Mr Helfenbein, who is Jewish, said the graffiti has left his feeling 'upset and anxious'.

"It's awful, it's a gut punch," he said. "Me and my wife, who is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivor, feel anxious about this - it was right next door to where we live."

Officers at Avon and Somerset Constabulary are urging witnesses to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: "We received a call from a third party on Monday 28 September to reports of criminal damage to a car in the Waters Road area of Bristol.

"Enquiries are continuing.

"Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and give the call-handler log number log 227 of 28 September.
