President Michael D. Higgins leads tributes after Irish Olympian Jerry Kiernan dies aged 67

Irish athlete Jerry Kiernan - who finished ninth in the marathon at the 1984 Olympics - has died aged 67.

The Kerryman, who was also an RTE sports pundit and athletics coach, represented Ireland at the Los Angeles games and won the Dublin Marathon in 1982 and 1992.

He was the seventh Irishman to run a sub-four-minute mile and won the national cross country title in 1984.

President Michael D Higgins led tributes, saying: "News of the death of Jerry Kiernan, Olympian, sports commentator and athletics coach will have been heard with sadness by all those in the sports community and those who enjoyed his voice in commentary.

"His achievements in 1984 and his enduring coaching legacy will be long remembered."

Originally from Listowel, Mr Kiernan lived in Dublin for most of his adult life where he worked as a teacher.

Mr Kiernan coached many of Ireland's top athletes, including middle-distance runners Ciara Mageean and John Travers.

He was a life long member of Clonliffe Harriers Athletics Club in Dublin, who confirmed he passed away on Wednesday night.

The club said: "Jerry Kiernan was an institution.

"He was one of the country’s top coaches, was very much a philosopher and TV athletics expert.

"He will be greatly missed by his family, club mates, athletes and the athletics family."
