President Michael D Higgins announces death of beloved dog Sioda

President Micheal D Higgins has announced the death of his dog, Sioda, following a short illness.

The sad news came today in an Áras newsletter which said: "Sadly we must report that Síoda has passed away after a short illness.”

Beloved pooches, Sioda and Brod, have been a big part of social events held at Áras an Uachtaráin.

The pair of Bernese mountains dogs were featured in several photos with dignitaries from around the world.

People took to Twitter to express their sadness at the death of the much-loved pooch.

Father Paddy Byrne said: "Sioda, the President’s beautiful dog has died. Pets are always a rich blessings. All God’s creatures have a place in the choir of life."

Dr Mary McAuliffe said: "Ah no. I met had the pleasure of meeting Síoda (and the President) at the Aras a few times. 2020 is just the worst!"

A third person said: "Síoda woofed at me once. A good girl."

Another social media user added: "Bawling my eyes out at the loss of Síoda. One of the nation's favourite doggos.

"I've no doubt that she offered so much support to President Higgins and Sabina in these uncertain times, and I offer my condolences to them. See you on the other side doggo."
