President-Elect Trump Calls For Debt Ceiling Extension To 2029

President-elect Donald Trump speaks

President-elect Donald Trump recently made a late-night announcement on Truth Social, calling for an extension of the debt ceiling until 2029. In his post, Trump emphasized the need for Congress to either eliminate or extend the debt ceiling to 2029, labeling it as 'ridiculous.' He stated that without this extension, any potential deals should not be made.

Trump's concern over the debt ceiling's impact on his legislative agenda in 2025 led him to oppose a short-term bill that aimed to fund the government through March. The debt ceiling, which was previously suspended by the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act in June 2023, is set to be reinstated on January 2. At that point, the Treasury Department will have to rely on its available cash reserves to meet the nation's financial obligations.

Despite initially supporting a bill that proposed extending the debt ceiling until 2027, Trump faced a setback as the bill failed to pass in the GOP-controlled House. Subsequently, Trump is now advocating for the debt ceiling extension to span until the conclusion of his second and final term in the White House.
