Fresh Tension Between United States and Israel Over Gaza Conflict

The ongoing military operations in Gaza have become a source of tension between the United States and Israel. President Joe Biden recently escalated his criticism of Israel's approach, describing it as 'over the top.' In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office conveyed determination to continue the military action but acknowledged the need to protect civilians.

The situation in Gaza has raised concerns about civilian casualties and the lack of humanitarian aid reaching those in need. President Biden expressed his distress over the high number of innocent people suffering and called for an end to the violence.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, while advocating for the military to proceed with caution, acknowledged that the operation would require moving civilians out of harm's way. He requested the army to provide a detailed plan to ensure the safety of non-combatants during the operation.

Israeli military's previous methods for protecting civilians have been criticized.

The Israeli military has employed measures in previous military operations in Han Yunus to protect civilians. These measures included notifying specific neighborhoods via text messages and airdropped leaflets, urging residents to follow designated routes to safe areas. However, it has been observed that these routes are not always secure, resulting in casualties along the way. In some cases, individuals have chosen to remain in their homes out of fear and have subsequently become victims of the conflict.

While the focus has primarily been on Gaza, the United Nations has recently raised concerns about potential war crimes in the occupied West Bank. Specifically, they have cited two instances of war crimes. The first pertains to a 12-man undercover commando unit entering a hospital disguised as medical personnel. The UN asserts that using medical clothing to deceive and pass oneself off as protected personnel violates the rules of engaging in military operations. The second issue involves the killing of individuals receiving medical treatment in the hospital. According to the UN officials, the maximum justifiable action would be to arrest and detain individuals, using lethal force only if met with significant resistance.

The current situation in Gaza and the potential war crimes in the West Bank have drawn international attention and condemnation. In order to address the growing concerns, it is vital for all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of innocent civilians, provide unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and ensure compliance with international laws and conventions regarding the conduct of military operations. Only through constructive dialogue and a commitment to a peaceful resolution can a lasting solution be achieved. The international community plays a crucial role in holding accountable those responsible for any violations of these principles.
