Preservation specialist picks up £900,000 windows contract at Grade B listed flats conversion

Building preservation company Richardson & Starling has been handed a £900,000 contract to refurbish more than 400 sash and casement windows as part of the landmark Boroughmuir High School conversion.

Cala Homes (East) is redeveloping the B-listed building to create 87 refurbished one to four bedroom apartments and a further 17 mid-market rental apartments in a £20.4 million project.

That will involve overhauling 430 windows - several up to 4.5 metres wide - in keeping with the character of the building. Eight technicians from Richardson & Starling, part of the Veitchi Group, will strip down the large sash and casement windows, repair rot-affected and damaged timber, fit draught proofing and install new double glazed units before refitting the units with new weights and ironmongery.

Richardson & Starling will also attend to preservation repairs to the roofing timbers during a job which will take eight months.

R&S managing director Graham Duncan said: “Richardson & Starling, with the backing of Veitchi, are the only building preservation company in Scotland that could have resourced and delivered this contract on programme and budget.

“Also, the project works to our ethos of conserve and repair which is in line with the local planning policy for this building.”
