Preseason Week 3 broadcast confirmed Darwin Thompson is Chiefs No. 2 RB

NFL analyst Todd McShay has joined the broadcast team in Kansas City this preseason.

McShay brings with him years of knowledge and expertise as an NFL draft analyst with ESPN. He’s provided some interesting takes this preseason, including analysis of the newest players on the team.

During the preseason Week 3 broadcast, McShay revealed that before the game, he spoke with the man in charge of the roster decisions: GM Brett Veach. During that conversation, an interesting bit of roster news was revealed to McShay.

“Brett Veach, the general manager, was really honest with me before the game,” McShay said. “And I was a little bit surprised, despite watching how good and explosive Darwin Thompson’s been. But he said, ‘Listen, (Thompson) is the No. 2. The reports are real. This guy has played so well that we think he’s going to be the No. 2.'”

Even though the preseason depth charts may not reflect it, Thompson is viewed as the No. 2 RB by the general manager. Honestly, this news shouldn’t shock any Chiefs fans. Anyone with eyes could tell you that Thompson was one of the best RBs on the team, given his play this preseason. It’s nice to see fans are seeing the same thing as the coaches and front office members.

Through just three games, he’s had 12 rushing attempts for 60 yards along with three receptions, 38 yards and a touchdown catch. He’s also looked the part, too, making multiple defenders miss, showcasing his speed and signature contact balance. Apart from the statistics and performance, Thompson also has said all of the right things about that success. He’s humble and knows there’s work that he still has to do.

McShay also added that he’d assumed Hyde was going to be the No. 2 guy in Kansas City. He pondered if the Chiefs will keep three or four RBs and how Hyde fits into that equation. It’s going to be an interesting decision for the Chiefs’ front office with roster cuts less than a week away.
