A four-year-old girl who was hit by a car in Hobart's northern suburbs earlier this week has died at the Royal Hobart Hospital, police have confirmed.

The girl was taken to hospital in a critical condition after she was hit by a passing car on Cadbury Road in Claremont at around 1:00pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Tasmania Police said the child's father was attempting to fix the car they were travelling in after it had broken down when she ran onto the road and into the path of another car.

An off-duty doctor provided assistance to the girl before she was taken to hospital by an ambulance on Tuesday afternoon.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
