Prepare your immune system for the winter months with these simple changes

The winter months can be extremely harsh on the mind and body.

Illnesses are more common and the lack of sunlight can mean healing and repairing becomes more difficult.

So, Health Plus general manager Simon Bandy has devised a list of top tips to feel better this winter and combat the cold and dark nights.

These are his four pieces of advice:

Get eight hours of sleep

This is the recommended daily amount by doctors.

It is when the body gets chance to naturally repair and heal itself after the stresses we put it under on a daily basis.

However, it is not always as easy as that. Health Plus recommends eating light in the evening, warm baths before bed and a fresh air supply in your room to get soundly off to sleep.

Garlic

An unusual piece of advice is to eat as much garlic as possile.

Or, if the taste is too much, rub some into the soles of your feet to get into your immune system quickly.

If this is till to much for you, you can try a garlic supplement that is odourless.

Increase antioxidants intake

These help fight against infection and are found in berries, dark green vegetables and beans.

So you need to eat more of these to get the nutrition you need.

Stay clean

Antibacterial gels and washing hands after sneezing and coughing are common sense, but essential, to stop the spread of disease.
