The 39th Gulf Cooperation Council Summit will kick off in Riyadh on Sunday with discussions set to focus on bolstering Gulf cooperation and security affairs.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz will chair the meeting.

The gatherers are expected to underline the strategic partnership that binds the member-states and bolster the GCC’s standing on the regional and international arenas.

Talks will focus on strategic military cooperation and regional affairs, including the situation in Yemen, Syria, Palestine and Iraq, as well as the Iranian file.

A number of issues not on the summit agenda may also be addressed.

Observers said that the summit will show great attention to youth affairs and their future job opportunities.

Over the years, the GCC had achieved a number of landmarks, such as the establishment of a joint Gulf market, customs and monetary unions and joint electricity network.

It is currently preparing to complete a project for a 2,200-kilometer railway network that will link the Gulf capitals with each other, starting from Muscat and ending Kuwait.

The last GCC summit was held in Kuwait in December 2017 and saw the announcement of the “Kuwait Declaration” that emphasized the council’s role in consolidating its accomplishments towards its people.
