Premiership winter break accelerated as Celtic vs Rangers and derby clashes enter cold storage

The SPFL have announced they will bring this season's winter break forward as the Scottish top-flight goes into cold storage after Boxing Day.

The decision comes hot on the heels of the Premiership sent reeling with the news on Tuesday that clubs faced nearly empty stadia for some of the country’s biggest matches.

Of the 12 clubs only Ross County and Rangers initially stood opposed to the change, with teams invited to officially submit their preference by 5pm on Thursday.

The move follows an explosive 24 hours after the Scottish Government announced on Tuesday that a cap of 500 would be placed on attendances from Boxing Day, regardless of stadium size.

That plunged the fixture list into chaos, with a host of derby matches to be played on January 2 and 3.

A huge top of the table clash between Celtic and Rangers risked being played in front of an almost empty Parkhead and that wasn't the only game.

Dundee host Dundee United on the same day, in the Championship Ayr United visit Kilmarnock and Hibs vs Hearts was scheduled for the Monday.

It was immediately suggested the two-week break for the Premiership should be brought forward to allow a chance for fans to return.

On the table was three options – continuing as planned, stopping immediately or playing Sunday's matches before taking the winter break.

Due to fixture congestion the Premiership clubs have chosen the third way, with the planned New Year games now to be played in the week beginning January 17

The Championship, League One and League Two will continue as planned, with no winter break in their schedule.

As a result the Ayrshire derby and Partick Thistle vs Morton will be played effectively behind closed doors.
