Premiership test events set for lower capacity than rugby fan return trial

Scottish football is finally set to welcome fans back into stadiums in two weeks after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon opened the door for three test games.

Celtic’s trip to Ross County, Rangers’ clash with Dundee United at Ibrox and Hibs’ visit to St Mirren are understood to be the matches selected after talks between the Joint Response Group and Holyrood officials.

But Record Sport also understands only 300 fans will be allowed through the turnstiles.

That’s despite 700 attending last night’s Pro14 rugby showdown between Edinburgh and Glasgow at Murrayfield.

If the pilot fixtures are successful, there will be a phased return of supporters to all stadiums from the following week.

The breakthrough comes after fury from the game’s top brass over a decision to block a trial run at tomorrow’s Premiership clash between Celtic and Motherwell.

Last night Ross County chairman Roy MacGregor confirmed only home season-ticket holders would be selected to attend the Celtic clash.

He said: “We are excited that we’re going to be able to get supporters in. We’ve really missed the fans. It’s been a bit soulless.”

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster added: “Clubs have worked tirelessly to ensure football could return safely and news that fans will be allowed in, albeit in restricted numbers, within a matter of weeks is hugely encouraging.”
