Premiership rugby clubs pushing for reduction to £7m salary cap

Premiership rugby bosses today began talks towards cutting the £7million salary cap by as much as 25 per cent.

The financial plight of clubs was believed to be central to Monday's board meeting, with London Irish one of five clubs pushing for a sizeable reduction in the cap.

There is also a push for a cessation to the two-player marquee rule, which allows players to fall outside the salary cap.

Last week, Premiership Rugby set an August 15 return date for matches and it is not thought a revised fixture list was part of Monday’s discussions.

Premiership Rugby were also discussing stages two and three of a return to training, the latter of which relates to full contact sessions, before matches resume.

Harlequins are expected to be one of the first clubs back this week.
