Premiership return boost as ramped up testing produces clean bill of health

No Scottish Premiership players tested positive for COVID-19 last week, as football gears up for its return north of the border.

The new top flight season is scheduled to start on August 1, and teams have been permitted to return to full contact training.

There are strict coronavirus guidelines in place though, with clubs required to test their players at least once a week.

In week one of the return to training protocol an unnamed Aberdeen player tested positive, though he is now back in training after subsequent negative tests.

The SPFL and SFA joint response group has confirmed that in the second week of testing no players tested positive, despite the total number of tests increasing from 936 to 1055.

A statement said: "The Joint Response Group can confirm that between Monday 6 July and Sunday 12 July, a total of 1055 Scottish Premiership players and team staff were tested for COVID-19, with no positive results recorded.

"The Joint Response Group will provide this information weekly as part of its Return to Football strategy and for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

"Due to medical confidentiality, no specific details will be provided on individuals tested."

Finding no positive cases is good news for the return of the Premiership, indicating that the protocols are working as clubs and authorities work toward football's safe return.
