Premiership end game limbo as SPFL 'to be left waiting' on UEFA green light

It's reported that this week's UEFA summit will NOT bring a definitive decision on whether seasons can end early.

This week an SPFL resolution to end the lower leagues on the tables as they stand passed, with £2million in prize money paid out to struggling clubs.

The motion also gives the governing body the power to call the Premiership at a later date, which would crown Celtic champions for a ninth season in a row.

UEFA were initially hostile to top flight seasons ending early, even threating European bans for countries that did so.

But Ajax director Edwin van der Sar revealed that stance is softening ahead of a video conference this week.

While it was thought that could pave the way to ending the Premiership season, French outlet L'Équipe warns not to expect any big decisions.

According to the newspaper, UEFA are considering two options for the 2019-20 season.

The first would see domestic leagues and European competitions restart at the same time.

The second, which is favoured by clubs, would give priority to domestic leagues, with nations given until early August to wrap things up.

The Champions League and Europa League would then be played in a shortened format starting from around August 10.

However, UEFA don't want to rush into any decision there are still far too many uncertainties to adopt, next week, a new calendar for the end of the season.

The European governing body is wary of making a decision that could then have to be reversed based on the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic.

That means it's unlikely that the SPFL will be told one way or the other whether they have the green light to end the Premiership and make Celtic champions.

A video conference will be held on Thursday with representatives from all 55 federations where they will be informed of the options for ending the season, but the executive committee is not expected to make a final decision two days later.

Instead it's understood they'll formalise the postponement of the women's 2021 European Championship, which will be moved back a year to make way for the rescheduled Euro 2020.
