Premiership clubs' plan to 'ban' plastic pitches could impact Accies in future

Hamilton Accies could face future pitch problems with news that Premiership clubs plan to meet this summer to discuss whether there should be a ban on artificial surfaces in the top flight.

Several clubs have voiced their opposition to the controversial surfaces in recent years, and with Hamilton and Kilmarnock now out of the Premiership, the opposition to a ban has been significantly weakened, with only Livingston planning to utilise one next season.

Should Accies, or Killie, earn promotion back to the Premiership after this coming season, they could be told to rip up their current pitches.

The Scottish Sun reports that "senior club figures in Scottish football" want to hold the debate about scrapping synthetic surfaces to improve the overall matchday experience in the Premiership.

The proposal could face significant opposition though; while only Livingston plan to use a synthetic surface in the top flight, nine of the 12 clubs voting against it would cause it to fail.

It also needs the agreement of 75 per cent of the SPFL's 42 member clubs to go through.

Given that below the Premiership, Hamilton, Killie, Airdrie, Clyde, Alloa, Falkirk, Queen of the South, Cove Rangers, East Fife, Forfar, Montrose, Raith Rovers, Stenhousemuir, Annan Athletic, Edinburgh City and Kelty Hearts are set to use artificial pitches, while Queen's Park are planning to lay one at Lesser Hampden, it might be doomed to failure.
