Premier League will not be changing VAR offside rule despite IFAB 'clear and obvious' claims

The Premier League will not be changing the way VAR is being used this season as it would affect the “integrity of the competition”

Fans up and down the country have been calling on adjustments to be made following a host of marginal offside decisions going against their clubs in recent weeks.

Wolves, Brighton, Norwich, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United all saw goals chalked off by the video referee over the weekend, despite their players looking level with the last defender to the naked eye.

But according to the Daily Mail, the Premier League are unlikely to introduce any changes in the middle of the season due to concerns that it would affect the “integrity of the competition”.

While the Premier League also believe that their elite group of video referees are simply following International Football Association Board protocols and making the correct decisions on matters of fact.

This is despite them being sent a reminder by the IFAB on Monday that the technology should only be used to overturn “clear and obvious errors”.

And the IFAB, who are in charge of the laws of the game, are also planning to issue VAR guidance following their annual meeting in February.

“Clear and obvious still remains - it’s an important principle,” said Lukas Brud, the general secretary of IFAB when asked about VAR in the Premier League.

“There should not be a lot of time spent to find something marginal.

“If something is not clear on the first sight, then it’s not obvious and it shouldn’t be considered. Looking at one camera angle is one thing but looking at 15, trying to find something that was potentially not even there, this was not the idea of VAR. It should be clear and obvious.”
