Premier League: Wednesday night's matches - in pictures
Arsenal v Liverpool As there were at the Manchester City game, the visiting fans protest before and during the game about the exorbitant ticket price for away fans at the EmiratesrPhotograph: John Sibley/Action ImagesThere's the ideal start for the visitors when they take the lead after just five minutes courtesy of some comedic defending and Suarez's right boot. As Liverpool attack Bacary Sagna slips and allows Glen Johnson to gallop down the left, he whips in a cross which Vermaelen should have cleared, but gets his feet in a muddle and allows the ball to reach Sturridge at the far post. His shot, from close range, is smothered, but Henderson taps the rebound to Suárez and his shot deflects off a defender and inPhotograph: John Sibley/Action ImagesHe's rather pleased with that Photograph: KERIM OKTEN/EPA
Straight from the restart Arsenal almost get back on level pegging when Theo Walcott scampers into space on the right, advances into the penalty area and then thwacks a shot as Jamie Carragher slides in to block. The ball's heading for the bottom corner but Pepe Reina gets down smartly to parry the ball away Photograph: Laurence Griffiths/Getty ImagesOn the hour mark Jordan Henderson doubles Liverpool's lead with a nicely taken individual goal. He gets the ball 40 yards from goal and in no position to threaten, but he turns Mertesacker sweetly, advances into the area, shoots, collects a lucky rebound when the shot is blocked by Santos, and passes the ball into an empty netPhotograph: Laurence Griffiths/Getty ImagesFive minutes later Arsenal start their comeback when Jack Wilshere curls in a lovely ball with his left boot, from a right-wing free-kick, and Giroud meets the ball at the far post to head inPhotograph: John Sibley/Action ImagesTwo minutes later the comeback is complete when Santa Cazorla passes to Giroud, who lays off to Walcott, wide of the right post. His shot is early and very, very hard, and Reina doesn't move as it flies past him into the far cornerPhotograph: Matt Dunham/APHe's got every right to be chuffed, it was a first class finish. Both teams had chances to win the game but it stayed all square until the final whistle. It was a thrilling game of football, whether it was worth £62 fans you'll have to ask the Liverpool fans. Final score: 2-2Photograph: John Sibley/Action ImagesEverton v West Bromwich Albion The home side take the lead just before the half-hour mark when Leighton Baines finished the move he started, eventually racing onto Leon Osman's measured pass down the left channel before unleashing an unstoppable swerving strike inside the top-left cornerPhotograph: Clive Brunskill/Getty ImagesOn the stroke of half-time Everton's Victor Anichebe is bundled over in the box by Claudio Yacob to concede a penalty which Baines despatched with aplomb to double the Toffee's leadPhotograph: Phil Noble/ReutersThe deficit is halved midway through the second half when Lukaku rounded Tim Howard and fired goalwards. John Heitinga's attempts to control the ball on the line ended disastrously as the ball spun up invitingly for substitute Shane Long, who headed in from close rangePhotograph: Carl Recine/Action ImagesA flying Tim Howard denies West Brom an equaliser during the tense closing stages as both teams go close, though David Moyes team hold on for a victory which consolidates their fifth place in the table. Final score 2-1Photograph: Peter Byrne/PANorwich City v Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham's new signing Lewis Holtby is on the bench for tonight's game Photograph: Matthew Childs/Action ImagesWes Hoolahan, here tussling with Jan Vertonghen, opened the scoring for the Canaries from six yards after the Spurs defence went walkabout as Snodgrass's deep centre found Holt, who nodded back to Anthony Pilkington, with the winger then showing excellent composure to pass to the well-placed Irishman who slotted the ball home from inside the six-yard box Photograph: Olly Greenwood/AFP/Getty ImagesWith ten minutes to go Gareth Bale gets the sluggish Spurs out of the soup with a most extraordinary solo goal. There seemed to be little on when he received the ball inside the centre-circle but he put on the after-burners to race to the edge of the Norwich area where he bamboozled Javier Garrido with a mesmerising step-over before lashing the ball home with the outside of his bootPhotograph: Olly Greenwood/AFP/Getty ImagesSuch a goal deserves an expressive celebration. The goal seemed to inspire Spurs as they pushed for a winner but alas it never arrived. Final score: 1-2Photograph: Chris Radburn/PAManchester United v Southampton There's another early goal, this time at Old Trafford where a David De Gea mistake means that Jay Rodriguez can sweep the ball into the net from inside the six yard box to give the visitors the leadPhotograph: Martin Rickett/PAHowever that lead lasts just five minutes when Wayne Rooney fires home from close rangePhotograph: Andrew Yates/AFP/Getty ImagesUnited take the lead just before the half-hour mark when a fabulous Robin Van Persie free-kick is superbly headed back across goal by a flying Patrice Evra to where Wayne Rooney is waiting at the back stick. The striker easily knocks the ball home to get United's noses in frontPhotograph: Jon Super/APSpeaking of flying Evras, here he is again soaring through the air as he attempts to thwart Jay RodriguezPhotograph: Andrew Yates/AFP/Getty ImagesIt's a case of four legs (almost) good as Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa, right, and Danny Wellbeck both unsuccessfully attempt to divert a cross into the Soton netPhotograph: Darren Staples/ReutersWayne Rooney goes looking for a third but this time he's thwarted by Southampton's Artur Boruc. The win means United are 7 points ahead of their Blue neighbours in the race for the title. Final score: 2-1Photograph: Jon Super/APFulham v West Ham The Hammers were right to have a number of players looking after Dimitar Berbatov as the Fulham dangerman opens the scoring after ten minutes with a header though there were suspicions of offside Photograph: Paul Gilham/Getty ImagesHowever Berbatov's defending isn't as good as his attacking as Kevin Nolan showed when he reacted first to a quickly-taken free-kick to equalise just after half-timePhotograph: John Walton/PAThe home side's lead was restored just one minute later when Hugo Rodallega headed home amidst a bundle of bodiesPhotograph: Stefan Wermuth/ReutersIn stoppage time Mladen Petric's shot from a tight angle went in off West Ham's Joey O'Brien to secure the win. Final score 3-1Photograph: Stefan Wermuth/ReutersReading v Chelsea During injury time at the end of the first half, Fernando Torres slides the ball through to Juan Mata who isn't distracted by the appeals for offside and he lashes the ball home Photograph: Andrew Boyers/Action ImagesJust after the hour mark, Chelsea captain Frank Lampard, seen here trying to avoid Adrian Mariappa, rose highest and thumped a header from Mata's corner into the net to put the European Champions firmly in controlPhotograph: Kirsty Wigglesworth/APSuch was Chelsea's dominance that keeper Ross Turnball hadn't had to make a save all game and in the 87th minute he was fishing the ball out of the net after Adam Le Fondre fired in Hope Akpan's pass. In the last minute of the game he was fishing the ball out of his net again after Le Fondre guided the ball home. Chelsea were left stunned by the double salvo, which will up the pressure on Blues boss Rafael Benitez who again was the target of the Chelsea boo-boys. Reading on the other hand had the point they needed to lift themselves out of the relegation zone. Final score: 2-2Photograph: Andrew Boyers/Action Images
