Premier League turf supplier reveals plans to redevelop its Derbyshire base

A Derbyshire firm whose services include supplying turf to major sports venues across the world has announced plans to redevelop its headquarters to create more space for itself and other businesses.

Talbot Group, which operates Talbot Turf Supplies and Talbot Farm Landscapes, has revealed plans to build new offices and business units on its Derby Road base, in Hilton.

Dubbed Talbot Farm Nursery, the brownfield site has been the group’s trading base for the past 30 years. It has also been a goods vehicle operating centre for the company’s lorries since Talbot Turf Supplies’ inception in 1989.

According to the directors of Talbot Group, brothers Mark and Sean Goodwin, the firm, which has 15 office-based staff at the Hilton site, needs to create more space due to the ongoing success of the business.

In a joint statement, the brothers said: “Office space has been expanded regularly and is constantly being outgrown.

“Space is an important part of the business’s future by creating not only a comfortable working environment for their staff, but also a business space suitable for customer visits, some of whom are spending in excess of £1 million with the company.”

In addition to creating more office space for its workers, Talbot Group also wants to build more offices and business unit for local firms.

The brothers claim that there is a high demand for commercial space in the area ever since nearby Hilton Depot was closed and sold off for housing.

They said: “The new units and offices will bring the company’s office accommodation into the 21st century and will also make a small number of units available for local businesses, which in turn will assist with creating jobs for the ever-growing local community – a community that the Talbot Group are proud to be a part of.

“This development will also see the relocation of the company’s plant and machinery to another local site outside of the village, something which Mark and Sean are sure will be welcomed by the local Hilton residents living in the vicinity of Talbot Farm Nursery.”

Both Talbot Turf Supplies and Talbot Farm Landscapes have been trading for around 30 years plus.

Talbot Turf Supplies grows its turf at locations in Allestree, Milford, Alvaston, Boylestone and Hilton, on around 250 acres of land. It supplies it to a number of major sporting venues, including Cardiff’s Principality Stadium (formerly Millennium Stadium) and Premier League football stadiums.

Four years ago, Talbot Turf Supplies took over Derby-based sports turf business Boughton Turf Management, which allowed it to stock and supply a range of ancillary products such as grass seed, fertilizer, sports turf dressings, chemicals and other associated products from its Hilton base.

Since it was founded, Talbot Farm Landscapes has taken its services worldwide. For the past three years, the firm has enjoyed success at the British Association of Landscaping Industries (BALI) Awards, including a double success at this year’s event.

Those awards recognised a recent project in the Port Loop area of Birmingham where the company turned a derelict, old warehouse situated adjacent to the Icknield Port Loop canal network into an open space and park area for the new urban development.

The contract saw Talbot using local companies and services such as Stenson Marina and Derby-based architects Maber.

In a joint statement, the brothers said: “Supporting local Derbyshire-based companies is important to us.

“We look to build strategic partnerships in business, and while this is something we have always done, we feel it’s vital to build these partnerships not only with suppliers but with our customers too.

“A prime example of this is the preferred partner status that we hold with one of the company’s high-profile clients, Derby County Football Club.”
