Premier League transfer rumours: Riyad Mahrez open to France return, David Alaba contract latest

The summer transfer window may be officially closed, but clubs are already preparing for another action-packed month in January.

The last window was an unusual one, with clubs having to think much more about their financial situation due to the coronavirus pandemic having a heavy impact on finances.

However, a few clubs were still able to spend big as they prepare their squad for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

With that being said, here, we take a look at the latest transfer rumours concerning clubs from across the Premier League.

United to move for Upamecano

Manchester United are set to move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in 2021, according to the Times.

United considered making a move for the highly-rated French central defender in the summer transfer window, but the 22-year-old ended up signing a new three-year deal with the German side.

Upamecano's new contract includes a clause - where he will be allowed to leave for £38million - that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are looking at triggering when it comes into play next summer.

As things stand, United have Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones as centre-back options.

Mahrez open to France return

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is open to returning to France and joining his boyhood club Marseille.

Mahrez came on late in City's 3-0 win over the Ligue 1 side in Tuesday night's Champions League clash.

The Algeria trickster told Canal Plus (via the Daily Mail ): "I could have gone to play in Marseille (in 2014-15) and I can still play in Marseille. You never know in life, you shouldn't close any door.

"I didn't know at the time and I was fine at Leicester but they ruled that I didn't have the required level (to play there)."

Mustafi offers contract update

Shkodran Mustafi has revealed he is yet to hold talks with Arsenal over a new contract with the club.

Reports had claimed that Mustafi had rejected a new deal at the Emirates Stadium and informed the club that he would be leaving at the end of the season.

However, the 28-year-old has played down those claims: "Well, at the moment, I was just happy to come back from injury, it was three long months - I was happy just to come back and be able to play again.

"We haven't been talking about anything, so there isn't anything I can tell you guys."

Alaba contract latest

David Alaba's contract negotiations are no closer to being finalised, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk.

Alaba has been linked with a move to both Liverpool and Chelsea - who will no doubt be put on alert by the latest developments.

The Austria defender - who can play both centre-back and left-back - is out of contract next summer.

This means that the Reds and the Blues could sign him on a pre-contract in January, and he would arrive in England in the summer once his deal at the European champions has expired.
