Jamie Vardy has won the Premier League‘s golden boot award for the first time, becoming the oldest player to do so, despite Leicester’s defeat at Manchester United on the season’s final day.
Vardy raced to the top of the charts during a relentless scoring streak before Christmas, scoring in eight successive games and 13 goals in a 10-game spell, and although both he and Leicester slowed down in 2020, he still did enough clinch the accolade.
He came into the final day of the season with 23 goals, two more than Southampton’s Danny Ings and three more than Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Ings scored once and Aubameyang struck twice in their final game, but neither could do enough to overhaul Vardy despite drawing a blank against United.
At 33, the former England international is the oldest player to win the Premier League golden boot, surpassing Didier Drogba who won it aged 32 in 2010/11. Vardy has credited his longevity in part with retiring from international duties where he was often called upon only to play understudy to captain Harry Kane.
Last year the award was shared between three: Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and Aubameyang, who scored 22 goals each.
