Premier League told to follow France example and award Liverpool title

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier believes the Reds should be awarded the title if the Premier League season cannot be repeated.

Top-flight clubs are planning to restart the campaign which has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Liverpool stand 25 points clear at the top and need only two more wins from their final nine games to lift the title.

Other countries have been forced to end their domestic leagues on government advice, with such circumstances in France last week seeing leaders Paris Saint-Germain being named champions.

Blood Red: How Liverpool Could Win The Premier League Title Without Playing

And if the Premier League ultimately find themselves unable to conclude the current campaign, Houllier wants Liverpool to be similarly honoured.

“Yeah," said Houllier. "That’s what they did in France.

"They gave it to Paris Saint-Germain. They had a 12-point lead and I think Liverpool needed just two games to win the title.

“If there was a difference of maybe two or three points then you could argue it takes some chances away from teams behind but 25 points there is no way they wouldn't be champions. They deserve it.”

However, Houllier believes French authorities were too hasty in finishing their league.

"We need to assess the risk and see what happens," he said, speaking to talkSPORT. “In France, they decided to stop it.

"Maybe to my view it was a bit too early to take that decision but the government decided so the league had to follow.”
