The Premier League will retain four Champions League places for the 2017-18 season after Juventus failed to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Before Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 tie, Serie A retained an outside chance of overhauling the Premier League in Uefa’s coefficient rankings but the Italian champions’ 6-4 aggregate defeat to Bayern after losing 4-2 at the Allianz Arena has ensured England will once more have four representatives in Europe’s premier club competition.
Lazio, who drew 1-1 in the first leg of their Europa League tie against Sparta Prague, are now the only remaining Italian team in European competition, while Manchester City and one of Liverpool and Manchester United are guaranteed to be represented in Friday’s quarter-final draws in Nyon.
Uefa use results from the last five seasons to calculate their rankings, with clubs gaining points by progressing through the competition. Only the top three ranked leagues are permitted the maximum of four entrants to the Champions League.
