The Premier League are set to announce that no matches will be subject to pay-per-view (PPV) charges until early next year and while the country remains in lockdown.

Clubs agreed last week to abandon PPV after a huge backlash against the £14.95 charge. Speaking to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee today, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said the U-turn on PPV will be formally announced soon.

Masters said: “We have listened to feedback and while we are not able to announce anything today we will be changing direction and moving away from it and taking another step, probably to see us through lockdown, the Christmas period and into January.”

Asked if he recognised the health concerns of launching a pay-per-view product in the middle of a pandemic, when the Government has tried to encourage people from gathering indoors, Masters floundered.

“I guess, you know, the health differences between PPV and pay TV is an interesting argument. It is not one I have got into,” he said. “But it is an interesting point. We are reviewing our decision regarding pay per view... we need to come to a resolution.”
