Premier League team of the week as Aston Villa duo join Man Utd man

There were thrills, spills, last-minute winners and plenty of shocks in the latest instalment of Premier League football.

Defending champions Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent start to the season on Monday night with a 3-1 win over the previously unbeaten Arsenal at Anfield.

That win put the Reds six points clear ahead of title rivals Manchester City, who suffered a shock 5-2 defeat to Leicester on Sunday.

Manchester United picked up their first win of the season against Brighton in a thriller at the Amex Stadium, with a 100th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes sealing the points for the visitors.

Frank Lampard's Chelsea survived an early scare at the Hawthorns to draw 3-3 with West Brom, with the Blues' London rivals West Ham producing one of the shock results of the weekend by hammering Wolves 4-0 at the London Stadium.

But who were the top performers in the third week of the season? And, more importantly, who made it into Mirror Football's team of the week? Time to find out.

Illan Meslier (Leeds)

Played a key role in Leeds winning their Yorkshire derby with Sheffield United, making two stunning saves from George Baldock and John Lundstram.

Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa)

Bagged Villa's third and final goal against a woeful Fulham side and showcased strong and resolute defending when called upon. An all-around solid performance from the England international.

Jann Vestergaard (Southampton)

Helped Southampton keep a clean sheet against Burnley with no-nonsense defending. Refused to be intimidated by the imposing presence of Chris Wood and trickery of Matej Vydra.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham)

Impeccably marshalled the Hammers' backline in their rout of Wolves. Covered his team-mates when required, was solid in the air and - as ever - was a threat from dead-ball situations.

Andy Robertson (Liverpool)

Made an uncharacteristic mistake in Liverpool's 3-1 win over Arsenal but used it as motivation for the remainder of the match. Made amends for his part in the Gunners' goal by firing Liverpool into the lead just after the half-hour mark.

Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)

Played an integral part in Villa's dismantling of Fulham, playing the role of conductor of the orchestra and goalscorer. Villa will need more of that from their captain this season if they're to beat the drop.

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Inspired Chelsea to a stunning second-half comeback against West Brom, scoring a fantastic goal from outside of the box. Was the liveliest Blues player throughout the match and looked the most likely to find a breakthrough before his 55th-minute strike.

Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)

Recovered well from giving away a first-half penalty in the Red Devils 3-2 thriller with Brighton, producing a sumptuous second-half assist for Marcus Rashford and showcased nerves of steel to score a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot.

He may have only been at Old Trafford for a matter of months, but it's clear as day the Portuguese is currently United's most important player.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)

The former Hull man ran riot against Wolves, terrorising their defence with his speed and showcasing great presence of mind. The brace he scored would've done a world for his confidence, which West Ham fans will hope will remain high for the remainder of the season.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Reminded England boss Gareth Southgate what he's missing out on with another hat-trick against title hopefuls Manchester City.

His second goal - a deft back-heel finish - was a reminder of the creativity and intelligence the veteran striker still possesses at the age of 33.

Callum Robinson (West Brom)

The former Sheffield United man bagged an impressive first-half brace in West Brom's thriller with Chelsea, with his second coming on the back of a howler from Blues new-boy Thiago Silva.

Led the line well in the first half but was unable to make an impact in the second as the Blues took over and launched a successful comeback.
