With the final European group stage fixtures out of the way, the busy festive period on the domestic front continued in earnest this weekend with the return of the Premier League.
Brentford kicked things off on Friday night with a dramatic late win over Watford in west London, before Manchester City took the chance to extend their lead at the top by beating Wolves in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool were all at home in the 3pm games, beating Southampton, Leeds United and Aston Villa, respectively, with Manchester United rounding off the day’s action with a narrow win at Carrow Road over Norwich.
On Sunday, West Ham were frustrated by Burnley at Turf Moor, while Newcastle were hammered 4-0 by Leicester and Crystal Palace downed Everton.
Tottenham’s game against Brighton having been postponed because of a Covid outbreak in the Spurs camp.
