Premier League statement explains VAR decision over Dele Alli 'handball' in Everton draw

VAR was once again a source of debate during Everton's clash with Tottenham at Goodison Park yesterday (Sunday).

The video assistant referee system was used on several occasions during the 1-1 draw as a number of key decisions were reviewed, including penalty appeals at either end and a potential red card late on.

On each review for a potential penalty, there were significant delays to the game as the on-field decisions were reviewed, and none more so than an incident involving Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli and Everton defender Yerry Mina, when the ball appeared to strike Alli's arm in his own box.

However, no penalty was given, with a Premier League statement read out on BBC programme Match of the Day 2 to explain the decision that was made.

"The VAR considered that both [Dele] Alli and [Yerry] Mina were challenging for the ball in the air and Alli was under pressure from the attacker as the ball struck his hand," the statement read.

"In his view it was not a clear and obvious error."

That was not the only decision in the game that was explained in a statement from the Premier League, with the league also confirming why Son Heung-min was sent off for a challenge on Andre Gomes, with referee Martin Atkinson initially booking the South Korean international, before then showing him a red card.
