Premier League star calls for season to be cancelled and Liverpool awarded title

Watford's Jose Holebas has urged Premier League chiefs to cancel the season, but not at the expense of Liverpool being named as champions.

All indications are that the 2019/20 season will resume at some point in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, with games now looking likely to take place behind closed doors.

Matches will only be played when it is safe to do so, but Holebas thinks that the current campaign should be cancelled with a look ahead to next season.

However, while some have claimed that such a move should see league leaders Liverpool denied their first league title in 30 years, Holebas thinks the Reds' 25-point lead means they should be named champions.

“In my opinion, you have to cancel the season, for me that is pretty clear,” the Greek defender told Sky Sports.

“I would give Liverpool the title, they deserve it and have played incredible football this season.

“They are clearly the number one team. I think it makes no sense to keep rescheduling all the time.”

The Premier League released a statement last week in which they made clear their intention to resume the season.

"It was acknowledged that the Premier League will not resume at the beginning of May – and that the 2019/20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so," they said after a meeting.

"The restart date is under constant review with all stakeholders, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic develops and we work together through this very challenging time.

"The Premier League is working closely with the whole of professional football in this country, as well as with the Government, public agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the game achieves a collaborative solution.

"With this, there is a combined objective for all remaining domestic league and cup matches to be played, enabling us to maintain the integrity of each competition."
